Process Paper
Because both of us have Chinese background, we chose to explore the relationship between the Chinese and United States governments. We noticed that diplomatic relationships in the past have been full of hostility. However, Nixon’s decision to strive for cooperation changed our interpretation. Nixon was different from other Americans of his time because he actually understood that harmony could only be achieved through acceptance of different cultures and nations. We choose to study a man who really strove for peace. We choose to study a man who’s diplomatic move inspired and shocked everyone around the world. Although he ultimately failed in creating harmony, perhaps we could learn from his mistakes to help carry out his legacy in the near future.
In order to fully understand our topic, we first began by researching back ground information, mainly the US's role in the Vietnam war and its affect on the American public opinion towards their government. After understanding the background issues behind Nixon’s presidency, we then searched for secondary sources to help us interpret what Nixon did to solve these problems. We then found actual text of Nixon's conversations with China as well as with Mao. Through primary and secondary interpretations, we drew a final conclusion about Nixon's choice to push for relations with China. However, in order to affectively show this in our websites, we had to organize our research, focusing primarily on our video and audio recordings and taking quotes from the rest.
First we gathered research materials and took notes. We decided to create a website because it allowed us to incorporate videos and audio clips along with our own interpretations and research. We then created a Weebly website and chose the format and pictures that would best suit our topic. We divided up the pages of the website so that we each had to write three pages with the title and bibliography page shared. We added movies and adequate recordings that could be used on the site. In addition, we chose excerpts from a list of quotes to support our argument.
Diplomacy is the ability within leaders of different countries to peacefully resolve conflicts for the benefit of both. There is no better example of this than the relationship between the China and the United States. Both countries could not be more different in their social and economic beliefs, but due to their responsibility to maintain world peace, they were forced to set aside their differences and learn to collaborate with one another. Both countries have finally learned that bombs and insults could only destroy. However, communications would lead to world peace and harmony. Nixon laid the first brick down in the construction of the bridge between Washington and Peking in hopes that his successors would finish it.
